Research / Final Project
The research essay will be based on one of two platforms: either a textual analysis using Voyant Tools, or a spatial narrative using the ArcGIS StoryMaps platform. Students will create a digital analysis of a literary text, to include an introduction to the topic and text, a clearly identified theoretical framework and method, and an investigation and analysis. The final project can take the form of a traditional essay, but must include digital elements that reflect its method; these could be data visualizations, images placed in StoryMap format, or another option of the student’s choice.
The project’s main objective is that the student be able to carry out literary research, using digital methods, with all the rigor and seriousness that this implies.
This final research project will be clearly scaffolded, with feedback at every step of the project, to ensure that each stage is a learning opportunity and that the student feels supported at every step of the creative journey.
The research process
The process of preparing the research project will be carried out throughout the second half of the semester and will consist of three submissions prior to the final deadline. The objective of this system is that the student can reflect during each stage of the writing process, ensuring that the project’s concept gradually matures and deepens. The stages to be delivered are these:
- Topic and description of the project: reading hypothesis (if relevant), main objective and specific objectives, and chosen format.
- Selection and annotation of reliable sources of information (minimum 3).
- Bibliographic discussion of the texts to form the project’s theoretical framework (minimum 1).
Participation and in-class activities
Active participation requires students to come to class thoroughly prepared for the day’s readings, demonstrate their understanding of the readings, and play an active and productive role in all group activities, including summarizing the readings.
The workshops are the practical application of the digital methods studied and include the following modules: selfie, Voyant analysis, ArcGIS StoryMap, AI research.
Exam
- There is no minimum grade for submission of the exam.
- The top 10% of the class and all those who obtain a grade equal to or greater than 6.3 are exempted from the examination.
- The exam is not disqualifying.
- In the evaluation of the final project, mid-semester tests, and final exam, 10% of the mark will be allocated to writing (grammar and spelling).
